Super SUVs May Well Become the Trend for the Car Industry

As the luxury car market is gaining momentum, novel car models appear one after another. Among them, the super SUV with the characteristics of both a sports car and an SUV has received more and more attention. So what is the evolution of SUV over the years? Let’s take a look together.

The 70s, when SUV was born

With the continuous development of the automotive industry, people are paying more and more attention to comfortability of cars. Finally, in the 1970s, Jeep launched a new model — Cherokee, and officially named this type of car SUV. Because of this, Cherokee is known by many as the world’s first SUV.

The 80s, the era of fast development

In the early 1980s, Japanese car companies entered the global SUV market. Those classic bulky Japanese SUVs had been a highlight in the history of SUV development. It was Mitsubishi Pajero that first became world famous. It debuted in the early 1980s and quickly became a hit, earning its name through its sturdiness, durability and reliability. It is omnipotent whether in the jungles of South America or the African deserts. Even today, many senior drivers are still nostalgic of it.

The 90s, the era of luxury SUVs

In 1997, the Mercedes-Benz ML was born, carrying a 4Matic four-wheel drive system. In that era, the four-wheel drive system was a novelty. It not only gave the car more power, but also make it more versatile, able to accommodate to all kinds of road conditions. Naturally, it was well recognized by the market. It has to be said that the hot sales of Mercedes-Benz ushered in a new era of luxury SUVs. This time, the German car brand further consolidated their global reputation.

Today, the start of a new era of SUV

When it comes to super SUVs, I have to mention Porsche Cayenne first. Compared with the first generation of Cayenne that made Porsche renowned, in 2010, Porsche released the second generation of Cayenne. The larger body, lighter weight and stronger powertrain made Cayenne dominate the SUV market, and it was even said that the second-generation Cayenne marked the beginning of the era of super SUV. The Cayenne Turbo equipped with a 4.8L turbocharged engine can output 500 horsepower.

In 2016, Cayenne saw its first rival — Maserati Levante. As the first super SUV under the brand closely related to Ferrari, Levante did have the confidence to compete with Cayenne.

However, in 2017, Cayenne unveiled its third-generation model. The longer, wider and lower Cayenne emits a strong sense of motion. The 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of this Cayenne Turbo model is only 3.9 seconds. The power of its engine is self-evident.

The battle between Levante and Cayenne can be described as intense. However, the debate on who was the fastest super SUV was officially ended by Lamborghini Urus’ coming in 2018. This much anticipated super SUV was equipped with a 4.0T turbocharged engine, and the acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h is astonishingly 3.6 seconds. Judging from this performance, its potential competitors must be models launched by car manufacturers such as Ferrari or Aston Martin, but not Cayenne or Levante. Later, Aston Martin and Ferrari indeed launched their own super SUVs respectively.

Urus is indeed strong, but with the vigorous development of new energy vehicles, all-electric super SUVs have also emerged. The most eminent one is the HiPhi X launched by Human Horizons. This SUV was a blockbuster at this year’s Beijing Auto Show.

HiPhi X subverted people’s stereotype impression of the simple interiors of electric vehicles. Its luxurious configuration is evident, and it is well worthy of the name of a super SUV. Meridian audio system, customized fragrance system from Givaudan, eight-direction adjustable seats, car refrigerator, etc., cater to users’ luxury demands.

The future is undoubtedly the era of super SUVs. Whether super SUVs produced by veteran car manufacturers or new forces in the industry, they undoubtedly represent the future trend of the car market. The HiPhi X has become a landmark. We are looking forward to seeing how other car brands would emulate and compete with it.
